MY LAYMAN'S GUIDE TO THE WORLD OF JEET KUNE DO
(The information presented here are the facts as proclaimed.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
" JKD " is an abbreviation for Jeet Kune Do, Translated " The Way of the
Intercepting Fist " brainchild of the late Bruce Lee ( 1940-1973 ) was Bruce
Lee's personal interpretation of the Martial Arts in which Wing Chun set the
stage that began as Jun Fan Gung Fu ( a modified Wing Chun ) and led to the art
known as " JKD ", Jeet Kune Do.
In The Beginning
"I'm having a Gung Fu system drawn up--this system is a combination of chiefly
Wing Chun, Fencing and Boxing. Boy, it will be IT!"--Bruce Lee (A letter to
James Lee, July 31st, 1965)
A New Beginning Or The End?
"I no longer believe in method, nor in system and without method, without
system--what's to teach?"--Bruce Lee (From a script for Longstreet, 1971)
"That's why I closed all the schools of Jeet Kune Do; because it was too easy
for a member to come in and mistake the schedule as the Truth and the agenda as
the Way."--Bruce Lee (1971)

The Mook Yan Jong (Wing Chun "Wooden Dummy) was used by Bruce Lee in his early
stages of Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do.

" JFJKD " is an abbreviation for Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do, Translated " Bruce Lee
The Way of the Intercepting Fist. " Jun Fan ( Bruce Lee's Chinese name ) was
incorporated into Jeet Kune Do by Bruce Lee's daughter Shannon Lee combining Jun
Fan Gung Fu and Jeet Kune Do and representing the complete body of technical and
philosophical knowledge studied and taught by Bruce Lee during his lifetime. The
abbreviation ( JFJKD ) and name Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do is a registered trademark
of the Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Nucleus, now known as The Bruce Lee Educational
Foundation ( a non profit, non hierarchy, organization made up of original
students of Bruce Lee, several popular students of Dan Inosanto, Linda Lee
Cadwell ( widow of Bruce Lee ) and Shannon Lee ). The goal of The JFJKD Nucleus
is to provide " Insight " into Bruce Lee's JKD using Bruce Lee's authentic
writings and information provided by original Bruce Lee students. Original
students organized to meet together after concern for the preservation of Bruce
Lee's art was threatened by the " Generic " use of the JKD name and symbol.
(*This was not the first time an alliance of original students was formed ) In
1996, the " JFJKD Nucleus " was born. The Nucleus included Taky Kimura ( senior
to Dan Inosanto ) and Ted Wong amongst other Original students. Dan Inosanto
chose not to be part of the JFJKD Nucleus. According to the JFJKD Nucleus, Dan
Inosanto was present and took an active role in its formation, a open door
policy still exists. Dan Inosanto later expressed publicly that only he had the
right to teach Bruce Lee's art. This caused the controversy that exists in the
JKD community today. JFJKD is sometimes referred to as " Original JKD ", however
the JFJKD Nucleus accepts " Original JKD " and " JKD Concepts " as both sides of
the same coin.
* The JKD Society, now defunct, was also concerned with preserving Bruce Lee's
art of JKD and included the likes of Richard Bustillo, Larry Hartsell, Dan
Inosanto, Herb Jackson, Daniel Lee, Linda Lee, Jerry Poteet, Gary Dill, Tim
Tackett, Ted Wong. ( this list may not be complete )

" JKDC or JFJKDC " is an abbreviation for Jeet Kune Do Concepts or Jun Fan/Jeet
Kune do Concepts ( Note: The slash is to avoid infringing on the copyright held
by the Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Nucleus although few use it), the name created by
Dan Inosanto ( original Bruce Lee student ), Translated The Way of the
Intercepting Fist, Concept ( or Idea ). The student of Bruce Lee began teaching
Jun Fan Gung Fu/JKD Concepts, Kali, Silat and Shoot Wrestling after Bruce Lee's
death. The term JKD Concepts was created by Dan after repeated requests by
students for instruction of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do. Dan, unwilling to term the
teachings Jeet Kune Do gave birth to the name JKD Concepts. Inosanto Martial
Arts Academy's JKD Concepts was the basis for every offshoot of JKD since the
death of Bruce Lee except JFJKD, Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do.

" IMB and JKD? "
"Today the foundations and concepts of JKD can be found in the teachings offered
at the IMB Academy in Carson, California. The Academy is headed by one of
Bruce's old students, Richard Bustillo, who is the director and co-founder, as
well as Dan Inosanto and Chuck Martinez, who trained with Richard and currently
is the Academy's president"...Linda Lee Cadwell, Bruce Lee, the Story.
What does I.M.B. mean?
Bustillo: "Originally it was three guys, Inosanto, Martinez, Bustillo. Martinez
was a wealthy millionaire and he liked to train. He was my student and wanted us
to develop further. I wanted a boxing ring, a weight room, showers, lockers, and
all that. I.M.B. also means International Martial Arts Boxing. In the long run
Dan got married and he moved locations and I stayed here and that's where all
the split up came from. It wasn't about us splitting up, it was about a
lifestyle change. Everybody changes"...Qi Gong Kung Fu Bruce Lee Tribute, Summer
1998.
Today Richard Bustillo (original Bruce Lee student ) runs the I.M.B. and is one
of the founding members of the JFJKD Nucleus preaching Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do.
